19 Of The Best Books For Couples

Do you and your love partner make daily efforts to strengthen and improve your relationship?

If not, you might want to pay attention, because the quality of your love relationship determines your overall happiness and even your health.

All couples, whether married or dating, straight or gay, have to consciously take action to keep their relationship strong in order for it to be successful for the long haul.

One great way to do this is to read books for couples that offer concrete steps to maintain and enhance the love, trust, respect, and intimacy between you.

Without being proactive, two people will start to grow apart and disconnect rather than evolving and thriving as a couple.

Some of the key aspects of a strong relationship are regular communication, active listening, compassion, and conflict resolution skills.

The common factor in all of these is being able to put yourself in your partner's shoes to consider their perception of a situation. You are a team, and your partner's happiness should be as important as your own.

You have to be considerate of your partner and his or her feelings to have an open and honest relationship that will stand the test of time and life challenges.

While couples counseling is always an option, you can address these issues preemptively by reading some relationship books that have proven to help couples get on solid footing.

It's best if you and your partner read these books together, but even if one partner doesn't participate, the other can share and model some of the positive skills he or she is learning.

Here are 19 of the best books for couples that I recommend:

1. The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts
By Gary Chapman

Love Languages book cover books for couples

This best-selling book has helped thousands of couples improve their relationships with their partners.

Dr. Chapman gives insight into the five ways we prefer to show and receive love to reach deeper levels of intimacy in our relationships.

By discovering your own love language and your partner's, you can build understanding and better communication.

With this knowledge, readers are able to increase their partner's satisfaction in the relationship, which then helps the other partner to be happier as well.

One of the best things about this book is that the strategies outlined can apply to other relationships in your life in addition to your love relationship.

Dr. Chapman provides a “love language test” in the book to help you determine your primary and secondary love languages.

The author argues that the power of questioning someone else to elicit their deep emotions can help address potential conflicts before they happen and damage your relationship.

If you know the right questions to ask, you can increase mutual understanding and create a positive change.

Being proactive instead of waiting for conflict to occur is the best way to address your needs and reinforce your commitment to each other.

Readers have found this book to be fun, enlightening, and even challenging at times, but it comes with many rewards and teaches a strong foundation for a happy life as a couple.

Some readers even like to keep a personal journal of the changes they want to make to strengthen their relationship.

After doing this and reading this book, it is easy to spend some sacred time together each day asking the questions suggested by the author, which will keep your relationship exciting.

Says one reviewer, “This book really helped my partner and me with our communication. We started by reading the 5 Love Languages. Great, great great book for us. We’re both ‘middle aged’ and divorced. Very educational and eye-opening.. and an enjoyable read too.
We’re reading the 201 relationship questions That one we discuss more hit and miss and jump around since you probably don’t need to read it from first to last page in order. Also very good, lots to discuss. Lets us put some of the harder topics off until we’re prepared to discuss.
We’re now also reading ‘Loving Each Other: the challenge of human relationships’ by Leo Buscaglia. I’ve always loved Leo. Surprised he isn’t on the list here.
